Using Windows 7 up to 120 days with full functionality

Similar Windows Vista, Windows 7 allow Windows 7 user extend 30 days trial with full functionality up to 3 times or 120 days.

Microsoft provides 3 times of available ‘rearm’ count, as part of tool for system administrator to reset and restore activation state of Windows 7 to factory state during initial OOB (out of box) grace period. So, by using the ‘rearm’ hack, user can reset and extend the activation grace period (aka evaluation trial period) for up to 3 times, effectively running Windows 7 without product key without activation for up to 120 days, or 4 months. The trick is, the rearm hack must be done only when the 30 days trial period or activation grace period is about to expire.

‘Rearm’ trick on Windows 7 is done using the similar commands and steps with Windows Vista. Follow these steps to reset and extend activation grace period from 30 days to 120 days in Windows 7:

1. Install Windows 7 without any product activation key.
2. After installation is completed, use the Windows 7 for 30 days and wait for the remaining days left to activate Windows counting down to 0, or almost zero.
3. When the activation grace period (or evaluation trial period) is almost expired or ended, log on to Windows 7 desktop, and open a Command Prompt window (i.e. type Cmd in Start Search and hit Enter).
4. Type any of the following commands into the command prompt, and then hit Enter:

sysprep /generalize

slmgr.vbs –rearm

rundll32 slc.dll,SLReArmWindows

slmgr /rearm
5. Reboot Windows 7 to enjoy another 30 days of free usage without worrying about activation nor even need to crack Windows 7.
6. When the activation grace period countdown timer almost running down to 0 again, repeat the ‘rearm’ trick to enjoy another 30 days of Windows 7 for free. User can run the rearm command for maximum of 3 times.

As rearm only works for 3 times, make sure the command is only been run when the 30 days countdown of evaluation period is almost expired.

Create and Attack a Virtual Hard Disk in Windows 7

In Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7, you can create and attack a virtual hard disk to the computer as physical hard disk. It is true, today i will show you how to do it.

STEP 1: You must know that Virtual Hard Disk create only on a boot partition, in many case boot partition is C: driver. I create a virtual hard disk in my computer that installed Windows 7, also you can create it in Windows Recovery mode when you choose boot from Windows 7 DVD. The difference between two methods is when you boot from Windows 7 DVD, you must press Shift + F10
or boot into the Command Prompt from the Start Recovery Options screen (see screenshot below)

STEP 2: You type Diskpart in command prompt and press Enter.

To create a VHD file, you have two options. First, create a fixed VHD file that allocate the entire maximum size that you set for the VHD file (command below allocate 20GB for the VHD file):

create vdisk file=C:\Windows7.vhd maximum=20480

Second, create a Expandable VHD file that store only as large as the amount of data that is saved in the VHD file. by execute the following command:

create vdisk file=C:\Windows7.vhd maximum=20480 type=expandable

STEP 3: To attack a VHD file to your computer, you must select this vdisk and attack it by execute these commands:

select vdisk file=C:\Windows7.vhd
attack vdisk

STEP4: Verify
Now, you can insert a Windows media, maybe Windows 7 DVD to install it, you have a new disk. It is the VHD file that you have created.

Disable Cut, Paste, Copy, Delete, Renaming Files and Folders with Prevent

You probably worry about your important personal data that could be accidentally deleted or renamed when your computer is being used by your kids or some third parties. If you are looking for any solution which can prevent data from being messed up or lost due to delete or rename action, then Prevent will be able to help you on this.

Prevent is a freeware and it is designed to disable cut, paste, copy, delete and rename functionality in your computer. As mentioned earlier, the main objective is to prevent anybody from deleting, renaming or messing around your data. Once you have run the installer, it will create a Prevent folder under system Program Files folder which contains Prevent.exe, Pre_1.exe, Pre_2.exe, Read Me First.txt, Uninstall.ini and Uninstall.exe. To run the program, you need execute Prevent.exe and it will display a window for you to define a hotkey. This hotkey is used to stop Prevent process and click Activate button once you have defined the hotkey. As soon as this program is activated, it will run at background silently and functions like cut, paste, delete and rename will be disabled regardless if they are initiated from keyboard button (Ctrl C, Ctrl X, Ctrl V, Delete), from right click context menu or under Edit menu. On top of this, it also takes the consideration to prevent data loss caused by terminating program without saving. As such, End Process button at Task Manager is disabled as well so that it doesn’t allow you to right click on process name and click on end process. To restore the setting, just use the hotkey you have defined earlier to stop the process.

Prevent ver 1.0 is absolutely free to download and it works well on Windows 2000/2003/2008/XP/Vista/7.

Basic Switch Configuration

In semester 3 of the CCNA course. You will learn about Switching. I have learned chapter 2 in this semester and today i post this lab "Basic Switch Configuration" that i learned in my CM-Group. Lab is show in figure below.

As you can see in the figure: IP address, network segment, 2 VLAN on 2 Switch. Here is requirement:
1. Configure IP address for 2 interfaces on ROUTER with IP address in the figure.
2. Configure basic secure on 2 Switch: enable Telnet, Console port, password Switch, turn off domain lookup.
3. Configure interface Vlan1 on 2 Switch.
4. Configure Port-Security
- On Fa0/1, Fa0/2, Fa0/3 of Switch S1: enable port-security, configure sticky mode with maximum 2 mac-address, violation is shutdown.
- On Fa0/4, Fa0/5, Fa0/6 of Switch S2: enable port-security, configure port-security map mac-address of each PC that attached into S2, violation is restric.
5. After verify everything which configured. You must copy running-config to startup-config and copy running-config to TFTP server.
Here is my instruction to configre port-security:
In S1:
Go to interface Fa0/1, other interfaces is similar:

S1#switchport mode access //allow access to this port
S1#switchport port-security //enable port-security
S1#switchport port-security maximum 2 //set maximum of 2 mac-address
S1#switchport port-security mac-address sticky //enable port-security with sticky mode
S1#switchport port-security violation shutdown //shutdown this port if have a third mac-address is pluged

In S2:
Go to interface Fa0/4, other interfaces is similar:

S2#switchport mode access
S2#switchport port-security
S2#switchport port-security mac-address type MAC Address of PC04
S2#switchport port-security violation restric

To verify port-security uses this command in EXE mode: show port-security interface fa0/1

Windows 7 have a new feature that enable you set permission on shared folder with Windows Live user. This feature valid only with HomeGroup, you can share a folder with one or more Windows Live user by click Link online IDs in User Account, see figure below

Next, click Link online ID in Online ID column

Next, type your Windows Live ID and password, after this click Sign in

Here is my picture that display a Windows Live ID

Since here, when you right click to share 1 folder, you can add share permission with Windows Live ID user similar with other users.
You can add many Windows Live ID as possible.

Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Host Management

VMM 2008 R2 creates and manages virtual machines running on Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V hosts. When you add a host that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 that does not have Hyper-V enabled, VMM 2008 R2 automatically enables the Hyper-V role on the host.
VMM 2008 R2 supports the following new features of Windows Server 2008 R2:
- Live migration between Windows Server 2008 R2 clustered hosts. With live migration, you can migrate a virtual machine from one node of a Windows Server 2008 R2 failover cluster to another node in the same cluster without any downtime. Because the virtual machine does not experience any downtime, the move is completely transparent to the users that are connected to the virtual machine.
- Network optimization detection during virtual machine placement. VMM 2008 R2 supports both Virtual Machine Queue (VMQ) and TCP Chimney, which are Windows Server 2008 R2 features that improve network performance for virtual machines.
- Network adapters that support the VMQ feature are able to create a unique network queue for each virtual network adapter and then connect that queue directly to the virtual machine’s memory. This connection routes packets directly from the hypervisor to the virtual machine, bypassing much of the processing in the virtualization stack.
- Network adapters that support the TCP Chimney feature are able to offload the processing of network traffic from the networking stack. Both of these features increase network performance and reduce CPU utilization.
- Hot addition and removal of virtual hard disks (VHDs). In Windows Server 2008 R2, Hyper-V allows users to add and remove VHDs from a virtual machine while it is running.

My CPU is Intel E4400 is not listed in Intel Virtualization List. I buy this computer in 2007, E4400 is a new chip that inexpensive. I buy it, now when I learn Microsoft Technology, i see Hyper-V a new feature of Windows Server 2008. Unfotunantely, My CPU does not support this feature, I want to upgrade my CPU but money is big problem with me, so sad. Determining DR and BDR in OSPF Router

In OSPF Routing protocols, Shortest Path First Algorithm (SPF) is used to determine DR and BDR in OSPF Router. When link-state of a Router on the area change. The Router will be send this change (LSA packet) to multicast address 224.0.0.5 (DR and BDR will receive this information). Then DR in the area will flood this change to multicast address 224.0.0.6 to all other routers (DRother). This will help decrease bandwidth in the area which cause is LSA packet. DR and BDR is determined when Routers exchange Hello Packet. DR and BDR is determined by the following steps:

1. Router that have the heighest priority will become DR and the second is BDR. The following command can configure this parameter in the interface mode:
ip ospf priority
2. In multiaccess environments, all routers is connected together by fastethernet interface. By default, the value of Priority of the Routers is equal. In this case, OSPF Router determine the heighest Router ID of any routers as DR and the second as BDR.
To verify DR and BDR, you can execute the following command in EXEC mode:
show ip ospf neighbor
Note: When DR and BDR is defined, the Router do not automatically change DR and BDR regardless the current DR and BDR have lowest Priority or Router ID of value. You can change manually by execute the command in EXEC mode:
clear ip ospf process
type yes to comfirm

2. If you do not configure manually the Router ID. OSPF Router will determine the Router ID by chosen the heighest IP Address of logical interfaces (loopback interfaces).
3. If haven't any logical interfaces. OSPF Router will chose the heighest IP address of any physical interfaces

To secure your router, you need configurable the password on your router. The password must be difficultly to guess. On Cisco Router, you can configure the password for line console, vty (telnet service) and password to access to EXEC mode. In turn, I will show you how to configure the password for three mode as mentioned above.

1. Console port for login local to the Router, the terminator must be attached directly to Router through this console port. To configure password for console port, you must execute the following command in Configuration mode
line console 0
password cisco
login
Password is cisco
2. Line VTY is responsible for enable the Telnet service on the Router. Execute the following command in Configuration mode
line vty 0 4
password cisco
login
To indicate specially the username and password for each user to telnet to the Router, you can configure a username and a password. To do this, execute the follwing command in Configuration Mode:
username thaolv password 0 thaolv
line vty 0 4
login local
exit
After this, you can telnet to this Rotuer by provide your username and password that configured. Here is the username: thaolv and password: thaolv
3. Enabling password for EXEC mode, you must execute the following command in Configuration mode:

By default, Password for the EXEC mode is encrypted in MD5 algorithm, Password for the line VTY and the line Console is not encrypted, but you can configure to encrypt these password by following command in Configuration mode:
service password-encryption
Now, your password for the line VTY and the line Console is encrypted in MD7 algorithm. Verify this by execute the following command in EXEC mode:

Task 1: Perform Basic Router Configurations.
Perform basic configuration of the R1, R2, and R3 routers according to the following guidelines:
1. Configure the router hostname.
2. Disable DNS lookup.
3. Configure an EXEC mode password.
4. Configure a message-of-the-day banner.
5. Configure a password for console connections.
6. Configure a password for VTY connections.
Task 2: Configure and Activate Serial and Ethernet Addresses.
Step 1: Configure interfaces on R1, R2, and R3.
Configure the interfaces on the R1, R2, and R3 routers with the IP addresses and banwidth from the table under the Topology Diagram.
Step 2: Verify IP addressing and interfaces.
Use the show ip interface brief command to verify that the IP addressing is correct and
that the interfaces are active.
When you have finished, be sure to save the running configuration to the NVRAM of the router.
Step 3: Configure Ethernet interfaces of PC1, PC2, and PC3.
Configure the Ethernet interfaces of PC1, PC2, and PC3 with the IP addresses and default
gateways from the table under the Topology Diagram.
Step 4: Test the PC configuration by pinging the default gateway from the PC.

I use VMware Workstration to create Virtual machines. Installing operating system for Virtual Machine is boring. I often clone virtual machine. This make virtual machines have same SID that these VMs do not have ability join domain. In previous version of Windows, we can use NewSID tool. This tool can not use in Windows Server 2008 and later. A new tool become candidate is "SYSPREP.EXE" included in Windows Server 2008 that we can use it by type sysprep in RUN dialog, SYSPREP Preparation Tool appear. If you want to create a new SID, remember to CHECK the “Generalize” checkbox

During the following reboot a new SID is automatically generated - and you will have to type in your Product/License Key, provide a new Computer Name, select an Administrator Password etc.

Installing Active Directory Certificate Services

In Windows Server 2008, Micorosft introduce many features about Active Directory Services. One of them is Active Directory Certificate Services (ADCS), it is important to understand what, why, when, how to use ADCS. ADCS is the backbone of Microsoft' Public key Infrastructures (PKIs). It will allow you to issue certificates for SSL/TTL user on websites or digitally sign your email.

Now let’s take a look at installing Active Directory Certificate Services.

Certain versions of Server 2008 only allow certain AD CS components to be installed; please take a look at this table for reference:

CA – issues certificates to users, computers and services while also managing their validity; comes in root and subordinate
Network Device Enrollment Service – allows network devices (i.e. routers) to request and receive certificates based on Simple Certificate Enrollment Protocol (SCEP)
Online Responder Service – implements Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) by evaluating certificate status, decoding revocation status requests, and sending back signed responses containing certificate status information

Install Enterprise Certificate Authority on a Windows 2008 Server

In this article, I will show you how to install Enterprise Certificate Authority on a Windows 2008 Server. Although, You should plan to deploy ADCS carefully. There are two types root CA: Enterprise CA and Stand-Alone CA, common we install a Stand-Alone for the root CA and Enterprise CA for Subordinate . But for testing purpose only, i will show you how to install Enterprise Root CA on a Windows Server 2007.
The Server is a member of the domain, user is domain admins

1. Open Server Manager.

2. Select Roles, then click Add Roles in the center pane.

3. The Before You Begin page may show up if you haven’t turned it off already. If you see it just click Next.

4. In the Select Server Roles window go ahead and select Active Directory Certificate Services by placing a checkmark next to it, then go ahead and click Next.

5. Now you will see an Introduction to Active Directory Certificate Services, where you can read about the good things you can do with AD CS.

The biggest thing to note here is the following:

Name & Domain settings of this computer cannot be changed after a CA has been installed. If you want to change the computer name, join a domain, or promote this server to a domain controller do so BEFORE install thing the CA.

Now with that warning out of the way, go ahead and click on Next.

6. Next you get to Select Role Services, which can include any of the following depending on what version of Windows Server 2008 you are installing this on — refer to the table above for specifics.

For this install I am going to choose the Certification Authority only.

7. Now comes the Specify Setup Type, and for this I am going to select the Enterprise radio button.

8. For the Specify CA Type, I am going to choose the Root CA radio button and then click Next.

9. In Set Up Private Key, I am going to choose Create a new private key radio button and then select Next.

10. Now you have to Configure Cryptography for CA in this window and there are quite a few to choose from.

Now I am no expert on cryptography, but some basic rules do apply … the longer the key the harder it is to crack. For our purposes I am going to use the following settings:

RSA#Microsoft Software Key Storage Provider
4096 Key Character length
md5 Hash algorithm

Recommend using SHA1 or SHA2 hash algorithm for backward-compability with old versions

Now I am going to click Next.

11. In Configure CA Name you can choose to overwrite the default common name for this CA and also the Distinguished name suffix if you so choose.

I am going to overwrite the default common name with Test-Enterprise-CA, but I will leave the rest alone.

12. Next we will Set Validity Period for this CAs certificate.

Remember a root CA issues itself a certificate. The default is 5 Years so I will just leave it at that. You can change this based on any need you might have in your environment. Click Next.

13. Configure Certificate Database will let you specify where you want to put the database and log files for the CA.

I am going to leave the default in place. Click Next.

14. On the Confirm Installation Selections you can see the answers you have chosen and you will again see a warning that you cannot change the computer name or domain settings for this server after installing the CA.

Go ahead and click Install… you know you want to!

15. After a few minutes you will see the Installation Results, and with any luck you will have the message: Installation succeeded.

After your glow of certificate happiness fades go ahead and click Close.

16. Now let’s go in and take a look by clicking on Certification Authority in Administrative Tools (if you get a UAC pop up just click Ok).

17. Now you can see the snap-in is showing the CA named Test-Enterprise-CA in the left pane with a bunch of folders for certificates.

18. You can also see that if you click the Certificate Templates folder, there are quite a few default templates that are already setup and ready to go.

Summary

Now that we have installed the Active Directory Certificate Services the next step would be to request some certificates and configure them.

The installation for a stand-alone CA is very similar to this. In fact if you are not in a domain and if you are not installing as a domain admin you will not even get the option for an Enterprise CA setup, so if you see that grayed out you now know why.

Yesterday, i installed Windows 7 RTM 64bit by USB. Some people do not believe that can install Windows 7 64bit from USB when computer is running 32bit operating system, please read my previous post to do that. Wow, Windows 7 is very nice and fast, it is faster than Windows Vista. I used Windows 7 from beta version, and now it is RTMed, i really wonder on it. Although, Windows officially released to world wide start at 1, oct, 2009 but many people can download Windows 7 now and using it. This is my screen shot:

How to check Intel and AMD Hyper-V Compatibility

You probably know that you can install Hyper-V only on a computer that supports Intel’s or AMD’s virtualization technologies (x86 virtualization), i.e. Intel VT and AMD-V. That is, the CPU and the BIOS have to support it. I have already encountered relatively new PCs which have processors with virtualization support, but the BIOS setup doesn’t have an option to enable it. Sometimes it helps to update the BIOS.
AMD and Intel both offer free tools that allow you to check whether a computer supports hardware virtualization. If you’re unsure, you should use these utilities before you install Hyper-V. They also show whether virtualization is enabled. On most systems it is disabled by default for security reasons. To enable it, you have to change the corresponding BIOS settings. That is, you have to enable hardware virtualization and the NX-bit (AMD) or the XD-bit (Intel) respectively. Hyper-V can be installed without CPU virtualization enabled, but then its hypervisor won’t start and you will find related error messages in the event log.
Unfortunately, the Intel tool is not 100% reliable. I tried it on a Fujitsu-Siemens server which definitely supported Intel VT, but Intel’s tool reported the opposite. We enabled Intel VT in the BIOS, and Hyper-V is running perfectly on this machine. I don’t know if the AMD tool is also that unreliable because we only have machines with AMD CPUs that don’t support AMD-V.
Please share your experiences with x86 virtualization. Did you have to update the BIOS? Did you also find that detection tools discusses here are a bit unreliable?

Installing, Configuring Exchange 2007 Edge Server (Part 2)

The EdgeSync service glues together the internal Exchange 2007 servers to the perimeter Edge servers. This is achieved whilst retaining the necessary isolation between the two network segments.

In Installing, Configuring Exchange 2007 Edge Server (Part 1) we started the installation of an Exchange 2007 Edge server at the DMZ.

So far we installed the Exchange Edge role on a standalone Windows 2003 server. The server is still not connected to the rest of the Exchange organization running internally. Indeed we could employ Edge as the perimeter server even if we were not running Exchange internally. As is, Edge only requires port 25 communications and the configuration of send/receive connectors, to act as a relay to any SMTP server.

However, quite obviously, Edge also includes special support for running together with an internal Exchange 2007 organization. This functionality is provided by the EdgeSync service. Running on an internal Hub transport server, EdgeSync pushes information to the Edge server. The following is some of the information transferred; more details are available from the article EdgeSync Replication Data:

Email routing configuration such as the list of accepted domains and connector configuration.
Recipient information that is especially useful for rejecting emails addressed to invalid recipients.
Safe Sender lists configured at each of the recipient mailboxes.

Making this information available to the Edge server enables the immediate filtering of emails. Furthermore, once the system is deployed, an Administrator will be able to manage the Edge server from the internal network. Configuration changes are simply pushed by EdgeSync, reducing the need to log on to the Edge server directly.

All this is achieved without compromising the need for isolation. EdgeSync only requires the opening of an additional port at the firewall separating the internal and perimeter networks. This is port 50636, a custom secure LDAP port to which ADAM is listening.

Another point to notice is the fact that information only flows from the internal to the perimeter network and not the other way round. Again this meets our isolation requirements. If the information at the perimeter were to be poisoned, this information would not get propagated internally.

DNS Configuration

Before proceeding further we have to take care of name resolution. Both Edge and internal Hub servers need to be able to resolve each other's name through DNS. For this to work we will add host (A) records for each of the Edge/Hub transport servers.

In a typical DMZ configuration the perimeter and internal networks run on different subnets. In our case we have these settings:

Perimeter subnet: 192.168.0.0/255 Edge Server Name: abcd.exchinbox.local Edge Server IP: 192.168.0.5

Internal subnet: 192.168.10.0/255 Hub Server Name: exchsrv.exchinbox.local Hub Server IP: 192.168.10.60

We start from the internal DNS server. This is the one used by the Hub transport. Thus we add an A record for the Edge server named 'abcd'. We add this under the Forward Lookup Zone for exchinbox.local.

We now test name resolution and port 25 connectivity. This telnet command will verify both:
telnet abcd 25

Note: If running Windows 2008, install the telnet client from Server Manager | Add Features, select the check box for the Telnet Client and complete the wizard.

Now we move to the perimeter network and create an A record for the Hub named 'exchsrv'. If the perimeter were running its own DNS server, we would create the A record there, as we did for the internal network. Otherwise we just edit the hosts file located under:
\system32\drivers\etc

Here we add the line:
192.168.10.60 exchsrv

We now perform the same telnet test to verify name resolution and connectivity from edge to hub:
telnet exchsrv 25

Creating an Edge Subscription

It is now time to setup EdgeSync. This process starts from the edge server machine. At the Exchange Management Shell we run:
New-EdgeSubscription -file c:\temp\EdgeSubscription.xml

The file parameter identifies the path where an Edge Subscription XML file is to be created.

On running the command we are greeted with a very informative warning that is worth reading:

"Creating an Edge Subscription makes the configuration of this Edge Transport server ready to be managed via EdgeSync. Any of the following types of objects that were created manually will be deleted: accepted domains; message classifications; remote domains; and Send connectors. Also, the InternalSMTPServers list of the TransportConfig object will be overwritten during the synchronization process. The Exchange Management Shell tasks that manage those types of objects will be locked out on this Edge Transport server. You must manage those objects from inside the organization and allow EdgeSync to update the Edge Transport server. EdgeSync requires that this Edge Transport server is able to resolve the fully qualified domain names (FQDN) of the Hub Transport servers in the Active Directory site to which the Edge Transport server is being subscribed. Those Hub Transport servers must be able to resolve the FQDN of this Edge Transport server. You should complete the Edge Subscription inside the organization in the next "1440" minutes before the bootstrap account expires."

Hitting 'Y' will complete this step and the Edge Subscription file is created. Here is what it looks like:

We now transfer this file to the Hub Transport server. Here at the Exchange Management Console under Organization | Hub Transport we select New Edge Subscription and follow the wizard that opens.

In the introductory step note the checkbox saying:
'Automatically create a Send connector for this Edge Subscription'

This will create the connectors necessary for emails to flow between Edge and Hub transports.

The final wizard step reminds us to open port 50636 for the EdgeSync service to be able to push information to ADAM.

"EdgeSync requires that the Hub Transport servers in Active Directory site Default-First-Site-Name must be able to resolve the IP address for abcd.exchinbox.local, and be able to connect to that host on ports 50636."

Completing the subscription, we can immediately have a look at the new configuration elements that were created. Under Organization | Hub Transport | Edge Subscriptions we find the registration of the 'abcd' server.

Under Organization | Hub Transport |Send Connectors we have two new send connectors:

EdgeSync in Action

In my test environment EdgeSync kicked off immediately and completed the first synchronization. However I did come across reports claiming that the Microsoft Exchange EdgeSync service needed a restart. Don't forget EdgeSync runs at the internal Hub Transport and this is where you will find the service.

Thereafter synchronization will follow a fixed schedule:
Every 1 hour - Configuration information
Every 4 hours - Recipient information
Every 5 minutes - Topology information

We can easily verify whether the first synchronization pushed the expected information to the Edge server. From the Edge server management console, we check the list of accepted domains that were configured internally.

While we are at the Edge server, we can verify if configuration changes were locked as promised earlier on creating the Edge Subscription. Here I tried to edit one of the send connectors and was promptly blocked:

"This task may not be run on an Edge Transport server that is subscribed to an Active Directory site. You must perform this operation on a Hub Transport server in the subscribed Active Directory site. The changes will be replicated to the Edge Transport server when synchronization next occurs."

Now let's see what happens when the configuration changes at the Hub Transport. Here at the "EdgeSync - Inbound to Default-First-Site-Name" Send Connector, I configured exchsrv.exchinbox.local as the smart host to be used by the Edge server for inbound emails.

This change won't be visible to the Edge server until the next synchronization cycle unless we force it to. From the Exchange Management Shell we first run:
Test-EdgeSynchronization

This returns a report showing that everything is synchronized except for the SendConnectorStatus.

Next we run:
Start-EdgeSynchronization

This will force an immediate synchronization pushing the new Send Connector settings to the Edge. Of course the same cmdlets also come very handy when troubleshooting.

Final Tips

With the Edge Server role, Exchange 2007 provides a good DMZ citizen that is able to satisfy the isolation restrictions imposed by the perimeter network. This is achieved whilst retaining a good level of integration.

EdgeSync provides the necessary link that allows us to manage the Edge server from the internal network. However it is important to understand the work that is going on behind the scene. If new recipient mailboxes are created or a new accepted domain is added, the Edge server won't know of these until synchronization kicks in. If this is an issue, we should force synchronization from the command shell with Start-EdgeSynchronization.

Of course apart for port 25 don't forget to open port 50636 for EdgeSync to work. EdgeSync traffic only flows from the Hub to the Edge transport. Thus we only need port 50636 open at the firewall separating the internal network from the perimeter (in that direction).

One of the areas where I see problems most often is name resolution. The Edge server needs to resolve the names of all hosts it will be interacting with, including those of the internal Hub transport. Same goes for the internal network. Here the Edge server name must also be resolvable through DNS.

Installing, Configuring Exchange 2007 Edge Server (Part 1)

The DMZ is a network segment where security considerations dominate the choice of what gets installed. Exchange 2007 is considered by many to be the first DMZ friendly release. Today we start installing an Exchange 2007 Edge server and look at what makes Edge a good DMZ citizen.

Despite the success in conquering internal corporate networks, earlier Exchange versions failed to replicate the same success at the DMZ. One reason for this was the Exchange server installation requirements that included IIS and Active Directory. These are often considered too cumbersome for hosts running internet facing services.

Splitting functionality into distinct roles, allowed Exchange 2007 to provide the first DMZ friendly solution. The Edge server role was thus born, an SMTP transport where email hygiene applications filter emails before allowing entry and exit to/from the internal network.

Today we walk through the installation of an Exchange Edge server. We also configure this to connect to the Exchange servers running internally.

Network Layout

We start our walk with a look at the network layout. A typical DMZ is shown below. Internet originating email is received by the Edge server. If accepted this is relayed to the internal Exchange Hub transport. In case of outgoing email, the Hub transport uses the Edge server as a smart host.

The separation between DMZ and internal network limits the type of traffic between the two segments. In this setup, the Edge server machine cannot be a member of the internal domain. Furthermore the Edge is expected to only provide essential services so as to limit exposure to potential security attacks. These limitations are catered for by the Edge server installation requirements. In fact we will be installing Edge on a standalone Windows 2003 Server. Of course it is also possible to install this on Windows 2008. I will be highlighting some differences between to two platforms as we go along.

For the purposes of this article, the internal network is already up and running. The internal domain name is exchinbox.local. An Exchange Hub transport server is also in place accepting emails for the domain adminstop.com.

Edge Installation Requirements

We start the Edge installation from a standalone Windows 2003 SP2 server. To satisfy the basic Exchange 2007 requirements we install the .NET Framework 2.0, MMC and PowerShell. With these bits out of the way, we look at some requirements specific to the Edge role.

First we have to configure the DNS Suffix for the Edge machine:

Open the properties for 'My Computer'
Select the Computer Name page and click Change
Click More
Enter the DNS name of the internal domain. In our case exchinbox.local
Finally we restart the machine

Next we have to make up for the lack of Active Directory services. Cutting the Edge server from the internal Active Directory is desirable from an isolation perspective. However AD also serves as the Exchange 2007 configuration repository. Thus a replacement that allows Edge to store its configuration is obviously required.

Thus on Windows 2003 we install the Active Directory Application Mode ADAM service. Just like Active Directory this is an LDAP directory service. However this will only be used to store information relevant to Exchange.

We download ADAM SP1 from the Microsoft download center. The Service Pack includes all the bits and can be installed directly on a machine where ADAM was never installed.

There is nothing worthy of note regarding the installation of ADAM. It is just a matter of clicking Next, 'I Agree' and Finish.

Note: ADAM is included with Windows 2003 R2. In this case use the Optional Component Manager to complete this installation.

Note: If we were installing Edge on Windows 2008 instead of ADAM we would install Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS).

Installing the Edge Server Role

We now satisfied the installation requirements. Using the Microsoft Update Service we make sure we also have all the latest updates. Finally we are ready to install the Edge Server role.

The usual Exchange 2007 installation Wizard greets us. Here we choose the Custom Exchange Server Installation option since Edge is not part of the typical installation.

At the Role selection step we select the Exchange Server Role.

Note how on selecting the Edge role all other roles are grayed. Edge has to be installed on its own. All other roles are intended to run within the internal network. We should now be able to complete the installation as usual.

Looking at ADAM

As already discussed, in this setup ADAM is acting as the configuration repository for the Edge server. ADAM is really a sibling of Active Directory. Thus tools that we usually use against Active Directory are also available for ADAM. Let's use ADSI Edit to take a look at what ADAM is storing.

Start MMC: Run | mmc.exe
Open, File | Add/Remove Snap-in | Add | ADAM ADSI Edit
Add the Snap-In and click OK to close the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog
Now right-click the ADAM ADSI Edit node and select 'Connect To...'
At the Connections Settings Dialog change the port to 50389. This is the default port ADAM listens to.
Hit OK to connect and we are ready to browse the directory. Here is the all too familiar Exchange Administrative Group object...

Final Tips

Today we started the deployment of an Exchange 2007 Edge server. We looked briefly at the general characteristics of the DMZ, the network segment to home our installation.

Next we looked at the installation requirements. These contribute greatly in making the Exchange 2007 Edge server role DMZ friendly. The requirements include ADAM. This fills up the void left by the lack of the Active Directory service, providing storage for the Edge server configuration. Once all requirements were satisfied, installing Edge was just a matter of selecting the custom installation type and the Edge server role.

In the next part of this article we will proceed with the configuration and connection of the Edge server to the Exchange servers running internally.

BlueScreenView - View Blue Screen of Dead Information

Blue screen is nothing new for windows user and it happens when windows encounter critical system error which can cause to system shutdown in order to prevent further damage. The causes of blue screen are normally due to incompatible DLLs or bugs in kernel of the operating system, physical faults such as faulty memory, power supplies, overheating of computer components and hardware running beyond its specification limits. When blue screen happen, it will create a mini dump file which contains information about the crash and this information could be very useful to analyze what is wrong that caused the blue screen. BlueScreenView is able to scan all mini dump files created during blue screen crash and displays the information for quick glance. Every crash generates its own dump file and these dump files are listed in the upper pane with filename, date/time of the crash, and the basic crash information as displayed in the blue screen such as Bug Check and 4 parameters. To view the details of the device drivers loaded during the crash like product name, file version, company, address in stack , from/to address and etc, you can view it at the lower pane and drivers that their addresses found in the crash stack will be highlighted with pink color, that will definitely help you identifying suspected drivers that cause the crash easily. Currently, the lower pane has 3 different view modes (Options -> Lower Pane Mode) in which you can switch to any one of them as you preferred. All Drivers mode displays all drivers that were loaded during crash and drivers that their addresses were found in the stack will be marked with pink color. Only Drivers Found In Stack mode displays drivers with addresses found in the stack of the crash only and Blue Screen in XP Style mode displays a blue screen that similar to what windows displayed during crash.

DNS Stub Zones in Windows Server 2003

We would like to extend a warm welcome to Microsoft expert Mitch Tulloch as he presents his first article to the WindowsNetworking.com community. In this article we'll learn about stub zones, a new feature of DNS in Windows Server 2003. Stub zones can help reduce the amount of DNS traffic on your network by streamlining name resolution and zone replication. We'll examine how stub zones work, when you would use them, and how to set them up in this tutorial.

Stub zones are a new feature of DNS in Windows Server 2003 that can be used to streamline name resolution, especially in a split namespace scenario. They also help reduce the amount of DNS traffic on your network, making DNS more efficient especially over slow WAN links. This article will look in detail at what stub zones are, how they work, and when to use them. I'll also walk you through the process of creating a stub zone to facilitate name lookups between two separate forests. But first, a little background on DNS zones is necessary to see where stub zones fit into the overall picture.

Types of DNS Zones

A zone is a contiguous portion of DNS namespace managed by one or more name servers. Zones contain resource records that specify the name of the DNS server authoritative for the zone (SOA record), the names and IP addresses of all name servers in the zone (NS records), the names and IP addresses of other hosts (A records), aliases for hosts (CNAME records), and so on.

In the original implementation of DNS found in RFCs 1034 and 1035, two different types of zones were defined:

Primary zones, which store their zone information in a writable text file on the name server.
Secondary zones, which store their zone information in a read-only text file on the name server.

In the implementation of DNS on Windows NT, these two types of zones were referred to as standard zones. A typical scenario for a company that had a single Windows NT domain deployed would involve setting up two name servers on the network, one containing the standard primary zone (the primary name server for the domain) and the other containing the standard secondary zone (the secondary name server). Whenever a new host (for example, a file server) was added to the network, both these name servers had to be updated so clients could find the new host using DNS. To do this, the administrator would create a new A record on the primary name server since the only the primary zone could be modified. The primary name server would then notify the secondary that its records had changed, and the secondary would pull the updated zone information from the primary until it had an identical copy of the primary zone. From the perspective of the secondary name server, the primary name server represents the master name server for this zone.

The main problem with this arrangement was that if the primary name server went down, no changes could be made to the resource records since secondary name servers contained read-only zone information. Also, it meant that all the changes you made to DNS had to be performed on a single name server (the primary), which could be an inconvenience if the company spanned several locations.

Windows 2000 provided a solution to these issues by introducing Active Directory Integrated zones, which stored their zone information within Active Directory instead of text files. The advantages of this new type of zone included using Active Directory replication for zone transfers and allowing resource records to be added or modified on any domain controller running DNS. In other words, all Active Directory Integrated zones are always primary zones as they contain writable copies of the zone database.

Active Directory Integrated zones work well for most Windows 2000-based networks, but they do have some issues. One limitation is if you are dealing with two separate forests (disjointed namespace), a common scenario when companies are merging or form part of a conglomerate. For example, say Company A has close business ties with Company B and employees in Company A need access to resources on Company B's internal network. The usual way of providing them this access would be for the DNS administrator of Company A to add a standard secondary zone on each of Company A's name servers. These secondary zones would then point to name servers on Company B's network as their master name servers, and would obtain their resource records by zone transfers with Company B's name servers. While that works, it's overkill for several reasons. First, it generates a lot of zone transfer traffic between name servers in Company A and Company B, which can pose a problem if the companies are linked together by a slow WAN connection. Second, if Company B decides to decommission one of its name servers without telling the administrator of Company A, some of the secondary zones on Company A's name servers could suddenly find themselves without a master, and once their records expire the Company A clients that use them will no longer be able to access resources in Company B.

What Stub Zones Do

Enter stub zones to the rescue. A stub zone is like a secondary zone in that it obtains its resource records from other name servers (one or more master name servers). A stub zone is also read-only like a secondary zone, so administrators can't manually add, remove, or modify resource records on it. But the differences end here, as stub zones are quite different from secondary zones in a couple of significant ways.

First, while secondary zones contain copies of all the resource records in the corresponding zone on the master name server, stub zones contain only three kinds of resource records:

A copy of the SOA record for the zone.
Copies of NS records for all name servers authoritative for the zone.
Copies of A records for all name servers authoritative for the zone.

That's it--no CNAME records, MX records, SRV records, or A records for other hosts in the zone. So while a secondary zone can be quite large for a big company's network, a stub zone is always very small, just a few records. This means replicating zone information from master to stub zone adds almost nil DNS traffic to your network as the records for name servers rarely change unless you decommission an old name server or deploy a new one. And to make replication even more efficient, stub zones don't use UDP as traditional DNS zone transfers do. Instead, stub zones use TCP, which supports much larger packet sizes than UDP. So while a typical zone transfer might involve many UDP packets flooding the network, stub zone transfer only involves a few packets at most. Also, while most DNS servers can be configured to prevent zone transfers to secondary zones from occurring, stub zones request only SOA, NS, and A records for name servers, all of which are provided without restriction by any name server since these records are essential for name resolution to function properly. Finally, since stub zones can be integrated within Active Directory (secondary zones can't), they can make use of Active Directory replication to propagate their information to all domain controllers on your network.

In our previous scenario, stub zones can be used instead of secondary zones to reduce the amount of zone transfer traffic over the WAN link connecting the two companies. To do this, the administrator for Company A would simply log on to one of the domain controllers, open the DNS console, and create a new stub zone that uses one or more of Company B's name servers as master name servers. By making this stub zone an Active Directory Integrated zone, the stub zone will then be automatically replicated to all other domain controllers on Company A's network. Now when a client on Company A's network wants to connect to a resource on Company B's network, the client issues a DNS query to the nearest Company A domain controller, which then forwards the query to one of Company B's name servers to resolve.

How to Create a Stub Zone

Let's see how it works in practice. In my lab I have two forests set up, one for Company A running Windows 2003 Server and named test2003.local, and the other for Company B running Windows 2000 and named test2000.local. The domain controller for the root domain of Company A is named SRV220 while the domain controllers for the root domain of Company B are named SRV210, SRV211 and SRV212. Sally is an employee of Company A and her desktop computer is named DESK231, and she needs to access a share named CATALOG located on SRV210 in Company B. To do this she clicks Start, selects Run, and types \\srv210.test2000.local\catalog and the result is an error:

This is because her command issues a DNS query against her name server SRV220 which has no information in its DNS database about test2000.local, the root domain of Company B:

To allow users in Company A to access resources in Company B, the administrator of Company A decides to create a stub zone for Company B's domain. To do this, right-click on Forward Lookup Zones in the figure above and select New Zone. This starts the New Zone Wizard:

Clicking Next brings up the Zone Type screen, and we'll choose Stub Zone here and select the checkbox to create an Active Directory Integrated stub zone:

Click Next and the Active Directory Zone Replication Scope screen is displayed, which we'll leave at its default setting for automatic replication of stub zone information to all domain controllers in the test2003.local domain.

Clicking Next displays the Zone Name screen, and here we type test2000.local as the name of the stub zone since this is the name of the target domain on Company B's network:

Clicking Next displays the Master DNS Servers screen, and we enter the IP address 172.16.11.210 for one of the name servers on Company B's network:

Clicking Next and then Finish runs the wizard and creates the new stub zone, which here is highlighted in the DNS console connected to SRV220 on Company A's network:

Note in the above figure that as expected the stub zone contains only an SOA record, an NS record for each name server in the domain, and an A record for each name server in the domain. Now when Sally clicks Start, selects Run, and types \\srv210.test2000.local\catalog a window opens up displaying the contents of the CATALOG share on SRV210 in the remote forest:

Summary

Stub zones are easy to create and can make name resolution between forests more efficient, but they have other uses as well. For example, stub zones can enable name servers to perform recursion without needing to query the Internet root name servers or internal corporate root servers, thus decreasing the number of hops between name servers and making name resolution more efficient. Another use of stub zones is to keep delegated zone information up to date and prevent lame delegations from wrecking name resolution within a forest, and that would make a good topic for a future article. Both of these are good topics for future articles, so stay tuned for more on stub zones later.

DNS Conditional Forwarding in Windows Server 2003

In this article we'll look at conditional forwarding, a new feature of DNS in Windows Server 2003. Conditional forwarding can be used to speed up the DNS name resolution process by directing queries for specific domains to specific name servers. This tutorial explains in detail when conditional forwarding can be useful and how to set it up.

Conditional forwarding is a new feature of DNS in Windows Server 2003 that can be used to speed up name resolution in certain scenarios. They can also be used to help companies resolve each other's namespace in a situation where companies collaborate a merger is underway. This article will look in detail at how conditional forwarding works, how to configure it, and when you might use it. But first, let's briefly review the concepts of forwarding and forwarders in traditional DNS, starting with different types of name queries.

Forwarders and Forwarding

When a name server is queried in DNS, the way it responds depends on the type of query issued, which can be either iterative or recursive. In an iterative query, the client asks the name server for the best possible answer to its query. The name server checks its cache and the zones for which it is authoritative and returns the best possible answer to the client, which could be either a full answer like "here is the IP address of the host you are looking for" or a partial answer like "try this other name server instead, it might know the answer." In a recursive query, things work a little different for here the client demands either a full answer (the IP address of the target host) or an error message like "sorry, name not found." In Windows DNS, client machines always send recursive queries to name servers, and name servers usually send iterative queries to other name servers.

Sometimes this process isn't enough however. A simple example is a company that has Active Directory deployed on its internal network and uses a private top-level domain like .local for its forest. For example, say a company has a single Active Directory domain named test2003.local, a domain controller (and DNS server) named SRV220 and has a dedicated connection to the Internet. A user named Bob goes to his desktop computer named DESK231, opens Internet Explorer, and tries to access Google (www.google.com). Here's what happens DNS-wise as far as name resolution is concerned:

DESK231 sends a recursive query to SRV220 asking to resolve www.google.com into its associated IP address.
SRV220 looks in its DNS database and finds zone information only for the test2003.local domain, realizes www.google.com is not part of that domain, decides it has no way of knowing how to resolve www.google.com into an IP address, and what happens next depends:
1. If, when you promoted your standalone server to the role of domain controller using dcpromo, your machine was disconnected from the Internet and there were no other DNS servers on your network, then dcpromo creates a root zone (".") in its DNS database that specifies itself as the root name server for all DNS name resolution (that is, "the buck stops here"). In this case, SRV220 realizes it can't answer the query and returns a "name not found" error to the client and Bob can't open the Google home page.
2. If however, when you promoted your server to a domain controller, your machine was connected to the Internet, then Windows contacts the first available Internet root name server and downloads a list of all Internet root name servers, which becomes its list of root hints. In that case name resolution now continues as follows:
SRV220 sends an iterative query to the first available Internet root name server, which responds with the IP address of a name server authoritative for the .com top-level domain.
SRV220 sends a second iterative query to the name server authoritative for .com, and this machine responds with the IP address of a name server authoritative for the google.com domain.
SRV220 sends a third iterative query to the name server authoritative for google.com, and this machine responds with the IP address of the host named www.google.com.
SRV220 returns the IP address of www.google.com to DESK231 and Bob sees the Google home page appear in his browser.

Now that's a lot of steps, and if the company has a slow WAN link to the Internet then you're using valuable bandwidth. A better approach than "going up to root" to resolve www.google.com would be to configure a forwarder. A forwarder is a name server that handles name queries that can't be resolved by another name server. Let's see how the above scenario works when a forwarder is configured on the internal name server SRV210:

DESK231 sends a recusrive query to SRV220 asking to resolve www.google.com into its associated IP address.
SRV220 looks in its DNS database and finds zone information only for the test2003.local domain, realizes www.google.com is not part of that domain, decides it has no way of knowing how to resolve www.google.com into an IP address, and checks its list of forwarders to see if any forwarders have been configured for it.
On the forwarders list it finds the IP address of the external name server hosted by the company's Internet Service Provider, so it forwards the query to the ISP's name server to handle.
The ISP's name server goes up to root as needed (which can involve two or more additional queries) to resolve www.google.com into its IP address and returns this address to SRV220.
SRV220 returns the address to Bob and he sees Google appear in his browser.

Note that this procedure takes about the same number of steps as before, but most of these steps are performed offsite by the ISP's name server, so the amount of bandwidth used over the Internet connection is considerably less and the processing load on the internal name server SRV220 is minimized as well. And these are good things from an administrator's perspective. Of course, if the forwarder doesn't respond within the timeout configured, the server can either try another forwarder (if configured) or use root hints (if available) or give up and return an error.

On Windows 2000, forwarders are configured using the General tab of the DNS server's properties sheet in the DNS console:

What's different in Windows Server 2003 is the concept of conditional forwarding, which I'll look at next.

What Conditional Forwarding Does

A conditional forwarder is one that handles name resolution only for a specific domain. For example, you could configure your name server to forward any requests for hosts in the domain google.com directly to a specific name server that is authoritative for the google.com domain. What this does is speed up the name resolution process by eliminating the need to go up to root to find this authoritative server. In this case our previous example would now look like this:

DESK231 sends a recusrive query to SRV220 asking to resolve www.google.com into its associated IP address.
SRV220 looks in its DNS database and finds zone information only for the test2003.local domain, realizes www.google.com is not part of that domain, decides it has no way of knowing how to resolve www.google.com into an IP address, and checks its list of forwarders to see if any forwarders have been configured for it.
On the forwarders list it finds a conditional forwarder configured, which specifies the IP address of an authoritative name server for the google.com domain, so it forwards the query to this name server to handle it.
The google.com name server immediately resolves www.google.com into its IP address without the need of going up to root and returns this address to SRV220.
SRV220 returns the address to Bob and Google quickly shows up in his browser, prompting Bob to say, "Hey, the network sure is fast today!"

Let's now see how to configure this in Windows Server 2003 DNS.

How to Configure Conditional Forwarding

First let's find a name server authoritative for the google.com domain. To do this we'll use the WHOIS lookup tool on the NetworkSolutions website at http://www.networksolutions.com/en_US/whois/index.jhtml. Go to this page, type google.com into the WHOIS search box, enter the code displayed (a feature that prevents mass lookups by automated programs), and the following results are displayed:

Now that we have the IP address of one of the name servers authoritative for the google.com domain, we can configure Windows Server 2003 DNS to conditionally forward all name queries for this domain to this name server.

To configure conditional forwarding, open the DNS console under Administrative Tools, right-click on the DNS server node, select properties to open the Properties sheet for the DNS server, and select the Forwarding tab:

If you compare this to the previous figure for Windows 2000 DNS above, you'll see a few differences. First, if you just want to configure a regular forwarder here, leave "All other DNS domains" selected in the DNS domain listbox, enter the IP address of the forwarder (typically the address of your ISP's name server) in the dotted box, and click Add. If you want to add a conditional forwarder however, do the following. First, click the New button and type the name of the domain you want your name server to conditionally forward to:

Click OK and the new domain appears in the top listbox (make sure it is selected for the next step):

Now type the IP address of your conditional forwarder into the dotted box and click Add to add it to the selected domain's forwarders list:

Click OK to apply the change and close the properties sheet and you're done. Now any name queries for the google.com domain that are issued against the name server are forwarded directly to the name server for the google.com domain to resolve.

Using Conditional Forwarding

When might you want to use conditional forwarding in the real world? I can think of several situations where it might be useful:

To improve name resolution between two separate companies that need to provide their users with access to resources in the other company's intranet. This sort of situation is common in a merger situation or between supply-chain partners. Just set up DNS servers in each company to forward name requests for resources in the other company's network directly to the IP addresses of name servers in the other company and you're done. Of course, this can also be done using stub zones as I discussed in my previous article DNS Stub Zones in Windows Server 2003 and I'll compare the two approaches in a moment.
To improve name resolution within an Active Directory implementation that has a disjointed namespace (separate forests or multiple domain trees) or a deep hierarchy of subdomains. In this kind of situation you can set up conditional forwarding so users in one domain can avoid having to go all the way to root to find resources in a separate forest, another domain tree, or way down the domain hierarchy in a tree. Again, stub zones could also be used for this purpose if desired.
And then there's using it simply to forward name queries for specific Internet sites like google.com as in the example above, but that example was meant only to be illustrative of the procedure for configuring conditional forwarding on your name server--my company has no plans on merging with Google anytime soon.

Summary

Finally, is there anything you need to watch out for regarding using conditional forwarding? Two things come to mind First, conditional forwarding is suitable if you are dealing with a fixed DNS infrastructure. That means in a merger or supply-chain scenario you must be sure the other company doesn't plan on changing their DNS infrastructure by decommissioning old name servers, deploying new ones, or changing the IP addresses of existing ones. If they do change their infrastructure and don't inform you of this, then your name server may suddenly find itself forwarding queries to non-existing name servers resulting in failed name queries and frustrated users flooding help desk with calls. In that case, it might be better to create stub zones on your name servers for zones for which the other company's name servers are authoritative. That's because stub zones automatically update themselves with the current list of name servers in the zone while configuring forwarders is a process that has to be done manually. Same thing in a large enterprise that has a complex Active Directory forest--if you aren't sure that administrators in other divisions of your company are going to tell you in advance when they change their DNS infrastructures, don't implement conditional forwarding--use stub zones instead.

The second caveat concerning conditional forwarding is not to get to carried away implementing it. You might think you could improve name resolution for your users by adding dozens of forwarders for the most popular Internet sites they use for work purposes, but this might be a bad idea. The reason is, when you have a long list of conditional forwarders configured, your name server has to go through the entire list until it either finds the domain requested or fails to find it, in which case standard forwarding is used (if configured), after which root hints is tried and standard recursion employed. The result of this is that your name server has to perform extra processing to go through the forwarders list each time a query is received, and in addition to increasing the CPU load on your server this can also result in slower name resolution rather than faster due to the time it takes to process an especially long list. And if the forwarder itself is also part of your own company's DNS infrastructure then be aware that the added load of receiving forwarded queries from other name servers and performing recursive queries to resolve them means your forwarders will experience especially heavy CPU utilization and may need to have their hardware beefed up considerably to handle it. So if you do plan on using conditional forwarding, particularly within your own enterprise, be sure to use it only where it really makes a difference and use it sparingly.

Configuring the Lightweight Directory Services, Part 2

In my first article in this series on creating lightweight directory services, I explained that the Lightweight Directory Service (AD LDS) had replaced Active Directory Application Mode in Windows Server 2008. I talk about some real world examples of how AD LDS is used. In this article, I want to finish off the series by showing you how to install AD LDS, and by talking about some of the differences between AD LDS and ADAM.

Installing the Lightweight Directory Service

The process of installing AD LDS is pretty simple. Begin by opening the Server Manager console. When the console opens, click the Roles container to go to the Roles Summary section. Now, click the Add Roles link. Windows will now launch the Add Roles Wizard. Click Next to bypass the wizard’s Welcome screen, and you will see a screen that allows you to select the roles that you want to install. Choose the Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services option, as shown in Figure A.

Click Next, and you will see a screen introducing you to the AD LDS. Go ahead and click Next again, and you will see a message telling you that the server will need to be restarted once the installation process completes. Now, click the Install button, and Windows will begin copying the necessary files. When the file copy process completes, click Close.

Configuring AD LDS

Now that you have installed AD LDS, it is time to configure it. To do so, close the Server Manager, and then select the Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services Setup Wizard command from the Administrative Tools menu. When the wizard starts, click Next to bypass the wizard’s Welcome screen.

You will now see a screen asking you if you want to install a unique instance of AD LDS or if you want to create a replica of an existing instance. Choose the option to create a new instance, and click Next.

You should now be prompted to enter a name for the new instance that you are creating. After doing so, click Next. Windows will now confirm that you want to use port 50000 for LDAP communications and port 50001 for SSL communications with the application partition that you are creating. Unless you have a compelling reason to change these port numbers, click Next to accept the defaults.

The next screen that you will encounter asks you if you want to create an application directory partition. The way that you will have to answer this question depends on whether or not the application that will be using the partition creates its own directory partition or not. For the sake of this article, go ahead and click No, followed by Next.

You will now be asked to enter the path where you want the data files and the recovery files stored. I recommend using separate volumes for the data files and for the data recovery files. Click Next to continue.

The next screen that you will encounter asks you to provide a service account. You can either use a network service account or you can designate a domain service account. Click Next, and you will be allowed the opportunity to provide either a group or an individual user administrative permissions over the partition that you are configuring.

When you are done, click Next and you will see a screen similar to the one shown in Figure B. This screen gives you the chance to import one or more LDIF files into the partition. This allows you to define the partition’s structure. The options that you choose here will vary depending on the needs of the application that will be using the partition.

Click Next and you will see a screen containing a summary of the configuration options that you have chosen. Take a moment to make sure that all of these options are correct, and then click Next to begin the installation process. When the installation process completes, click Finish.

AD LDS vs. ADAM

I want to wrap things up by talking for a moment about what makes AD LDS different from ADAM. There are several major differences, but one big difference is ease of management. You now have the option of using Active Directory Sites and Services to manage partition replication.

Another key difference is that it is now possible to audit changes to the directory service. Finally, AD LDS supports server core installations.

Conclusion

As you can see, installing AD LDS is not difficult to do. Even so, it is an essential skill if you plan on deploying an Exchange 2007 edge transport server or another directory enabled type of application server on Windows Server 2008.

Configuring the Lightweight Directory Services, Part 1

The Light Weight Directory Services, or AD LDS, has been around in one form or another for quite a few years now. In Windows Server 2003, this service was called the Active Directory Application partition, or ADAM. Being that the service’s new name is the Lightweight Directory Service, I hate to describe the service as a lightweight version of the Active Directory, but that’s really what it is.

The basic idea behind this service is that sometimes you may need to provide an application with Active Directory data or with a way of storing application data in the Active Directory database. In many cases though, providing the application with access to a domain controller may be impossible because of connectivity issues. More often though, security concerns may prevent you from making a domain controller available to the application in question.

A Real World Example

OK, I realize that my description of the AD LDS is a bit abstract, but I want to try to clear things up by explaining one example of how AD LDS is commonly used in the real world. Microsoft makes use of AD LDS in Exchange Server 2007. In case you are not familiar with Exchange 2007, it is Microsoft’s E-mail server product.

Exchange Server 2007 is designed to be run in a distributed manner, and you can configure each individual Exchange Server to perform specific roles. One of these roles is called the Edge Transport Server role. The edge transport server sits at the network perimeter and acts as an entry point for inbound messages coming from the Internet. This server then performs a variety of message hygiene tasks to get rid of spam and viruses. Once the undesirable messages have been disposed of, any remaining messages are sent to something called the hub transport server, which then sends the messages to the mailbox server. I have drawn a diagram of the basic architecture that I am describing, for the benefit of those who may not be familiar with Exchange 2007. You can see this diagram in Figure A.

As you can imagine, the edge transport server needs to be well hardened against attacks. Not only does it routinely have to deal with viruses, it sits at the edge of the network, which means that the server is exposed to the Internet, and is therefore susceptible to attack.

Exchange and AD LDS

Now that I have talked about the basic Exchange 2007 architecture, I want to explain how an edge transport server uses AD LDS. Being that an edge transport server sits at the network perimeter, it needs to be far more secure than the other Exchange Servers in an organization. In an effort to make an edge transport server more secure, Microsoft forbids you from making an edge transport server a domain member. This is a really big deal though, because every version of Exchange Server since Exchange 2000 has been dependant on the Active Directory, and Exchange 2007 is no exception.

Microsoft gets around this issue by using AD LDS to act as a sort of mini Active Directory to the edge transport server. If the edge transport server happens to be installed on Windows Server 2003, then ADAM is used instead of AD LDS. The reason why Microsoft uses this technique is so that the edge transport server will have access to the Active Directory information that it needs, but will not contain any Active Directory information that it does not absolutely require.

I don’t want to get into all of the technical details about the ways in which Exchange Server uses AD LDS. What I will tell you though, is that the edge transport server needs access to some Active Directory information. For example, it needs to know which E-mail addresses are valid for the Exchange organization. E-mail addresses are stored in the Active Directory as attributes of user accounts. At the same time though, there are a lot of other user account attributes that the edge transport server does not need access to. Likewise, the edge transport server does not need to know about other Active Directory objects such as groups, group policy objects, and things like that.

As such, the edge transport server uses a technique called an edge synchronization to communicate with a domain controller. This allows the edge transport server to get the information that it needs, without getting anything extra. This information is then placed into a watered down Active Directory database (the AD LDS database), that no other servers use.

Conclusion

In this article, I have explained one real world example of how AD LDS is used. Of course AD LDS is not unique to Exchange Server. There are plenty of other uses for AD LDS. In Part 2 of this series, I will walk you through a sample AD LDS deployment.

Yêu cầu:
Cấu hình IP trên các Interface trên từng Router như bảng trên.
Mỗi Router sẽ có 1 interface loopback giả lập mạng LAN với địa chỉ có dạng Y.Y.Y.0/24. Ví dụ Router 1 sẽ có LAN: 1.1.1.0/24
Cấu hình passwords routers: secret, line console, line VTY, password-encryption.
Cấu hình EIGRP trên mỗi Router: enable EIGRP, Network, Passive-interface, no auto-summary, Redistribute eigrp, Authentication.
